From time-to-time we notice some, maybe many, processes running on our computer with the name svhost.exe. These seem to be a catch-all for things we really don’t know enough about to not be worried.
One tool that I have found is the Resource Monitor. With that you can look at what process is accessing your network, and what address it is talking to. Great tool!
With Win 7, the Resource Monitor can be fired off from the Task Mangler (under the Performance tab). IIRC, with Win XP, it was available as a download from Microsoft to replace the Task Mangler.
