I finally switched from downloading my mail via POP to getting it sent directly to my home via SMTP. I’ve got a few neat things going that I wasn’t able to do before.

I have a different sound clip for each mailbox, using procmail and xmms2. Thunderbird would only allow me to have one audio clip for all mailboxes, including the ones that get mostly junk. I’ve also switched from Thunderbird to Mutt.

I 5xx reject HTML messages that don’t include a plain text alternative. These used to show up blank in Thunderbird. Very annoying! The MTA I’m using is Exim.

I’ve got some simple regex-based spam filtering but I’m thinking of adding SpamAssasin. I’m not really getting a lot of spam as it is. I’ve got one particularly extensive procmail recipe that filters out messages from Facebook reminding me to use Facebook.
