Backup, backup, backup. It’s the only real defense against ransomware.

Nightly backups with cron and rsync.

weekly backups to two different USB disks, each disk containing 3 complete (rsync) backups, with my most critical, irreplaceable data tar(1)ed, xz compressed, GPG encrypted, and uploaded to Google Drive (offsite). A third USB disk is used for backups whenever any major changes or work is done, to act as a sort incremental backup between the weekly, LAN-wide backup. Titanium Backup on my Nexus 7 additionally syncs 3 generations to Google Drive, as well as being copied to one of my LAN’s Linux systems. The thinking there is that it’s probably going to be faster to restore the backup files to my Nexus 7 from local storage, but if necessary can be taken from Google Drive.

    Goin’ commando, baby!
    Lovin my Chromebook!
