There’s the partition ID which is stored in the partition table at the beginning of the drive, but it’s also possible to identify the filesystem type by reading the beginning of each partition. I say this because some operation systems such as Linux will only do the later, they don’t care what the partition ID is. But I believe Windows does care. It’s possible that if the partition ID stored in the MBR became corrupted, Windows wouldn’t recognize the partition as containing data even though the underlying filesystem is intact.
So I suggest getting an Ubuntu DVD, booting into live mode, and seeing if you can read the Windows partition from there.
