A couple of thoughts:
If your imaging tool requires a contiguous space for the image, running defrag on the D: drive might help. The command line version for defrag does have more options that might help in that respect.
Before you do the defrag, maybe remove things you don’t need off D: might help (backups of hiberfil.sys and swapfiles you won’t need). And, let Windows compress the drive.
Do a cleanup of files on the drive you are backing up.
But, do you really want to upgrade (if that is the right term) to 10?
