The FreeDOS Project

FreeDOS is a complete, free, DOS-compatible operating system that you can use to play classic DOS games, run legacy business software, or develop embedded systems. Any program that works on MS-DOS should also run on FreeDOS.

  1. Also consider DOSbox. This is an emulator that is available for both Windows and Linux. (And of course dosemu is available for Linux.)

With DOSbox only a very basic set of commands is available, but you can install your favorite version of MS=DOS. And, since it runs in Windows, you don’t need to reboot your computer to get into it.

I suppose you could install FreeDOS in the DOSbox if you wanted to.
