Why Turn Off Message Preview?

The message preview pane in Windows Mail or Outlook Express is really nice and useful, but it comes with the risk of catching a worm or virus by just previewing an email.

That’s why it is best to disable the preview pane for security reasons in Windows Mail or Outlook Express, or at least to turn off automatic loading of remote images.

  1. If you switch the view mode to plan text, you should be able to avoid the security problems, while still keeping the preview pane.

  2. Its not just Outlook or Windows, The Preview pain(in-the-butt) is on by default in almost all clients. Not cool; it should be OFF by default.

  3. I almost never open messages in their own window. I read them all in the preview pane. If the preview is showing only plan text, what’s the harm?

    Turning off the preview isn’t a panacea. If you have to open some message to tell if they’re bad, you’d have been better off configuring your mail client to view all emails in a safe way, in the preview pane or when you “open” them.
